Newburgh
Preserve America adds Newburgh to its list

The federal government designated the City of Newburgh as a Preserve America community.
Preserve America is a new White House initiative that encourages communities to preserve and enjoy their cultural and natural heritage.
The designation could include some financial benefits. The Bush administration requested $10 million for grants in its fiscal 2005 budget, and Preserve America communities are eligible to apply. Grants of $50,000 to $250,000 would be awarded on a competitive basis to projects that use a community's historic resources to promote tourism and other economic revitalization activities.
The city got official word of its designation in a recent letter from first lady Laura Bush. Fargo, N.D., Daytona Beach, Fla., and Saratoga Springs also were designated.
Other benefits include use of a Preserve America logo on signs and promotional materials; notification of the designation to state tourism offices, visitors bureaus and the media; and listing in a Web directory showcasing each community's preservation efforts and historic tourist destinations.
